Before you merge PDF files

Save the source PDFs together in Files. Rename vague downloads like document-4.pdf, then decide the final sequence before opening a tool.

Open each source once. Confirm that it is the correct document, that every expected page is present, and that the page orientation is readable. A merger joins what it receives; it does not know whether a missing signature page or duplicated receipt is intentional. Password-protected files also need attention. The ScanlyGo browser tool deliberately rejects encrypted PDFs, so remove the password using software you trust before selecting the file.

Think about advanced PDF features as well. Visible pages usually combine predictably, but interactive forms, bookmarks, embedded attachments, scripts, comments, and internal navigation are more complicated than page content. Method 1: Merge PDFs in the ScanlyGo app

The tradeoff is installation. If you need one quick merge, are working on a borrowed device, or want to use the same interface on iPhone and desktop, the browser tool may be the shorter route.

Method 2: Use the private browser Merge PDF tool

The free ScanlyGo Merge PDF tool runs in Safari and other modern browsers. It combines complete PDF documents locally in the browser. Selected files are not uploaded to ScanlyGo, Firebase, analytics, or a conversion server.

1. Open the Merge PDF tool.

3. Wait while the browser checks each file and counts its pages.
4. Use Move up and Move down to arrange the documents.

The tool accepts up to 50 MB and 200 pages combined. It validates actual PDF content rather than trusting only a filename. Valid files can still be accepted when another selected file is empty, damaged, unsupported, or encrypted, and the page count shown beside each accepted file helps you catch an unexpected source.

This method merges complete documents in the displayed order. It does not select, delete, or rearrange individual pages inside a source PDF. Page dimensions, portrait or landscape orientation, rotation, and visible content are retained, but advanced features such as interactive forms, bookmarks, attachments, scripts, and document navigation are not guaranteed to remain functional.

The browser must load the PDF engine after you select files, so the first validation can take a moment on a slow connection. Once loaded, document reading and merging happen on the device. Large files can still challenge mobile memory even when they fit within the stated limits, so close unused tabs if Safari is under pressure.

Method 3: Insert PDFs with Apple Preview on iOS 26

On iOS 26, Apple’s built-in Preview app provides a page-level way to combine documents. Apple documents an Insert from File command that can add a PDF or image after a selected page, and page thumbnails can be dragged into a different order. This is useful when you need individual-page control rather than whole-document ordering.

1. Open the first PDF in Preview.
2. Tap the page count to show page thumbnails.
3. Touch and hold the thumbnail after which the next document should appear.
4. Choose Insert from File.
5. Select the next PDF from Files.
6. Repeat for other documents.
7. Drag thumbnails if individual pages need a different order.
8. Save or share the edited PDF.

Preview is a strong built-in choice when page insertion, deletion, rotation, or reordering matters. It is less direct for a simple batch of many complete documents because you insert files into an open PDF one at a time. Keeping an untouched copy is sensible, especially when editing a form or another document with advanced features.

If your iPhone does not have the Preview app, it may be running an earlier iOS release. Files and Quick Look can open and share PDFs, but older versions do not offer the same straightforward built-in insertion workflow. In that situation, use the browser tool or ScanlyGo; treat a custom Shortcut as an alternative only after verifying it as described below.

Automation alternative: Evaluate Shortcuts carefully

Apple documents that Shortcuts can accept PDFs from another app, run actions in order, and finish with a Save File or Share action. Apple does not document a current action sequence that merges multiple existing PDFs, so this guide cannot promise a working Shortcuts merge recipe across iOS versions.

If you evaluate a Shortcut:

1. Configure it to accept PDFs from the Share Sheet, then select disposable PDFs in Files in the intended order.
2. In the shortcut editor, use Show Info on each candidate transform action. Continue only if the action says it accepts multiple PDFs and produces a combined PDF; do not infer that behavior from an action name.
3. Add a preview before Save File or Share, run the Shortcut, and confirm the output’s page count and order. Avoid network or third-party actions when the PDFs must remain on your device.

This makes Shortcuts an option to investigate for a repeated routine, not a dependable recommendation for someone who needs to merge files immediately.

Which iPhone PDF merge method should you choose?

Check the merged PDF before sharing

Open the finished file and review it from beginning to end. Confirm the page count, document order, page rotation, signatures, and readability. Test form fields, bookmarks, or attachments if you expect them to work. Rename the result so a recipient can identify it, but avoid confidential details in a filename that may appear in email subjects, download histories, or shared folders.

Keep the original PDFs until the merged copy is accepted; the separate sources are easier to replace or reorder.
